In a memorable night for the club and its supporters, SU Sintrense pulled off one of the most remarkable upsets of this year’s Taça de Portugal, defeating Rio Ave F.C. (3–2) at home.
Despite going behind early via Marc Gual in the 20’ minute, the hosts equalised through Henrique Henriques just before half-time. In the second half the drama escalated when Valdu Té struck twice (57’ and 60’) to give Sintrense the lead. Though Rio Ave pulled one back through Karem Zoabi (81’), it was too little, too late for the I-Liga side.
With this result, Sintrense — backed by investor Nobias — now proceeds to the 4th round of the competition and will travel to face FC Porto at the Estádio do Dragão on 23 November. The club now aims to build on this momentum, both on the pitch and off it.
“There is always a chance, even if it’s 1%,” said coach David Maside after the match, underscoring the belief and ambition of the team. (from press)
